New Terrorist Group Emerges in Northwestern Nigeria - DHQ Confirms

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group called "Lukarawas" in Northwestern Nigeria. Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, made the announcement in Abuja on Thursday, November 7, detailing the group’s recent activities and the Nigerian military's response.

The Lukarawas group reportedly originated from the Republic of Niger, following a coup that disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger. Buba explained that the terrorists began their incursion into Nigeria’s Sokoto and Kebbi states, taking advantage of the fractured security efforts post-coup. Prior to this, joint operations with Niger’s forces had kept such threats in check.

According to Buba, the group managed to gain initial support from local residents who misinterpreted their intentions, leading to a delay in reporting their movements to authorities. This allowed the Lukarawas to exploit Nigeria's challenging northern terrains, particularly in less governed areas, spreading their influence and ideology.

Buba reassured the public that Nigerian troops have ramped up intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations aimed at dismantling the group. Despite the difficulties, he noted that the military is making progress in tracking down and neutralizing the terrorist threat.
