Olusegun Obasanjo Remembers Late Wife Stella's Role in His Release, Honors Her at Benin Hospital Inauguration
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently opened up about the crucial support he received from his late wife, Stella, during his imprisonment under General Sani Abacha’s regime. Speaking at the inauguration of the 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, Edo State’s capital, Obasanjo recalled how Stella's efforts played a pivotal role in securing his freedom.
Obasanjo was detained in the late 1990s on allegations of involvement in a coup. Following Abacha’s death, Obasanjo was released under the administration of AbdulSalam Abubakar, paving the way for his presidency. His wife, Stella, a native of Edo State, passionately advocated for his release, traveling across the globe to rally support. She later became Nigeria’s first lady before her untimely passing during Obasanjo’s second term in office.
Reflecting on her commitment, the 87-year-old Obasanjo shared, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive. She was in Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world. No amount of honour would be too much for the role she played.” He expressed gratitude for the hospital’s dedication to Stella, saying, “I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life.”
Obasanjo also praised Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for his dedication to the hospital project, which the former president described as a “first-class treatment center for any ailment.” He commended Obaseki, saying, “More grace to the elbows of the governor. With this kind of edifice, I can say that the governor started well and is finishing well.”
